Folks, I have spent all night reading about phonetic type things for my linguistic-type class, and all in all it makes me feel like Henry Higgins, from this scene in My Fair Lady when Eliza's looks at what he's been writing about her and she's all like "I can't read this, it ain't proper writing," and that is because he is writing in the INTERNATIONAL PHONETIC ALPHABET which I am here to tell you is a whole lot of fun. I mean, partly it sucks because it's a lot of symbols that mean different sounds than you're used to and it is a darn shame that I have to memorize them eventually, but when a chart is handy to consult, it is way fun to write things phonetically. And the whole time I'm doing it or reading it or thinking about it, I get to pretend that I am Henry Higgins/Colonel Pickering and that is more fun than is usually legal to have.

Katy, I think the real reason that you love the phonetic alphabet/feel like Henry Higgins is because I've grown accustomed to your face.
I remember doing that very thing! And we had to write whole passages into the phonetic alphabet. Aahhh the memories!
good luck with the phonetic alphabet-- I confess I spent extra time playing with that to avoid real homework..and it's very fun to write people letters in the alphabet or at least make them signs with their names on it. You can see, I was very focused on my education!
