Pragmatism and the Youth of Today

First day of Kindergarten:

Mom, explaining class procedure and running the kids through various situations in which they might have accidents but that's okay: "What happens if you have an emergency and you run to the bathroom but you don't make it in time?"

Expected response, in unison:  "It's okay!"

What one kid shouts out instead: "You could slip!!"

Yes folks, it's that time of year again, when I start having to carry around a pen and notebook so I can remember the startlingly awesome things that 5 year olds sometimes decide to say.  Sadly, I missed many possible gems today, since, as Mom's unpaid assistant, it was my job to sit outside with one 'strong willed' (ahem) child who thought the best way to celebrate the first day of school of her life was to literally kick and scream for the first half hour of it.  Seriously.  Remember that part at the end of the
movie of The Two Towers when Frodo and Sam are in Osgiliath  and the Nazgul dude comes up and does that undead shriek right in their faces
and they're filled with unholy terror?  I think that's what this kid was modeling her performance on.  After the shrieking died down, she settled in for a good 2 hour sulk/sniffle session, which was somewhat easier to deal with, but much less entertaining (not to mention more difficult to liken to a scene from a pop-epic film)
